Hi everyone
I am off out to buy a second hand van next week, probably either a Merc Sprinter or Transit in the LWB/High Roof range with the intention of converting to a camper van.
The reason for this is that i am a keen astrophotographer who last week for the first time went camping, did the whole tent, bed, cooker etc along with hauling a very large, very heavy telescope down to wales. I really enjoyed the week but 2 things became obvious to me....
1) BMW 325 Compacts are not designed with camping in mind!
2) I hate camping
So with that in mind i want to build myself a camper that means all i need do is pull up, plug in & set my astro gear up :-)
I can't really make any solid plans until i acyually get the van but i have an idea of what i want to however there is one thing i am unsure off to start with.
Water: i have read a few bits stating that the water tank is secured to the underside of the chassis and that you fill it via a filling hose connector on the side of the van but i cant figure out the waste water. i'm assuming this requires a second tank but in my head surely that needs to be removable so you can empty it.
How of you gone about this? anyone any pics?
So name is Alan, Hello & can anyone help?
Cheers
Hi Alan,
Have you read the article on this site about water.....it's pretty useful
http://www.campervanconversion.co.uk/campervan-water.html
There's also a load of links down the left hand side of that page to CVC community projects and what other people have done with their water systems with photos. Most home conversions I know of have the water storage tank inside the van but somewhere accessible so you can open it and fill it up. You're right a waste water tank needs to be removable so you need somewhere near and below the sink to store it but again somewhere accessible.
Purpose made water tanks usually have outlet points or purpose made lids to attach or run water pipe through, if you fashion your own plastic container (obviously needs to be super hygienic for the water but doesn't matter for the waste water) you can keep the lid and drill a hole through it for feeding the hose this keeps it water tight .
Good luck with the van hunting. A campervan would be great for a tour of all those Dark Sky Discovery Sites.....
cheers camping girl
i was thinking or running a waste pipe down under the van aand have a connection from the waste pipe to the waste tank that way the waste pipe is below the sink and shower so gravity is doing its part and so that the waste tank is under and not in the van, when im done empty it out, clean and store back in the van.
could that be the way to go?
I think that you can go to some conversion guys who took care of your van and turn it into a great camper van they have all th necessary requirement to make it the way you want it.
