Accessory Wiring

Hi All

there seems to be a vast amount of info on  the web about how to install a leasure battery and split wiring etc, but almost nothing concerning how to wire up after your leasure battery is fitted.

is there anyone out in camper world that has a very generic wiring diagram for all the accessories that go into making a camper more than just a van with a bed in it.......

thanks in anticipation

Hi Mutley,Sorry I haven't got

Hi Mutley,

Sorry I haven't got round to doing a full wiring diagram or section yet.  In brief though, its pretty straightforward and essentially exactly like wiring in a house only with thinner wires and less voltage!  From your second battery you have one thick fused wire leading to a fuse box or "distribution unit".  From there you have however many fused circuits as you need.  Wiring up things like fridges and inverters tend to be a bit trickier as there are typically larger currents involved so often you'ld wire them up directly to the battery.  For things like lighting circuits, water pumps, and gas heater fans the wiring is quite straightforward.  At the simplest level say you have a distribution unit (or just a basic automotive blade-type fuse box available from most automotive shops), you run a wire of the correct current rating to your appliance, then a wire from the appliance to earth (a stripped metal bit of the van), and ensure the fuse box contains a fuse of the correct current rating.  You can have more than one appliance wired up to each fuse.

Wiring up small appliances from a second battery in a campervan is pretty straightforward, but if you're in any doubt, get things checked by someone who knows about this stuff - using the wrong fuses or wires which are too thin could cause electrical fires so tread carefully!

Hopefully we'll get round to writing a full article on van wiring soon... watch this space!
