Conversion of Renault Trafic - first timer!

We have just bought a Renault Trafic with a view to converting to a campervan.  We have looked at a lot of websites about conversion and, from a financial point of view, will have to do at least some of the conversion ourselves.  Does anyone have any advice about how to get going on a DIY job, or of good companies who will work with you for a combined DIY/professional conversion?  Any advice gratefully received!

Conversion

Hi,

In terms of getting started have a good look around at what others have done.  There is quite a bit of stuff on this site (particularly in Planning) and also in all the other campervan sites out there which have layouts and pictures.  Then think about what you want the van for?  There are endless options in the detail but for some of the big components, the bed/bench seat, stove and sink there are kind of more limited options.  It is good to decide where these have to go then work round them.  My impression is most conversion companies like to do the whole thing or as much as possible.  I guess you will just have to ask, but good to have someone local-ish especially if you are going to do bits yourself and then you can drop in to discuss options and see how things are progressing.  A different option if you need help is to talk to local tradesman.  Often they are just as able to help with things like windows, welding, electrics, carpentry, plumbing etc....the fact it is in a van dosn't really matter for much of it as long as you can show them roughly what you are after.  Crucially, it is likely to be cheaper than a dedicated conversion company and might fit better with you doing some DIY yourself.  If you want the ease of leaving the van with someone who definitely knows exactly what you are after, how to do it, how to source the parts, how to make it look really good etc then a professional conversion is probably the way to go.  However, this is a self build campervan conversion forum so I'd have to say, save your cash for your trips and try to do as much as you can yourself!!

Thanks very much for this -

Thanks very much for this - its very useful. It would never have occured to me to contact local tradespeople.

I wonder if anyone has costed their DIY conversion from start to finish?  It woul d be great to have an idea of how much to budget.

Many thanks.
