Hi,
I've just joined the site and and hoping someone might be able to help me with some advice regarding insuring my Suzuki carry van whilst I am converting it. It is now in a garage having the raising roof and windows fitted...covered under their insurance.
However I have to insure it before I bring it home and do the rest of the camper conversion myself over the next three months. I then hope to register it as a camper.
The problem I now have is that it is not a van or a camper at the moment because the windows and the raising roof means it is modified. How do i insure it and can anyone advise me of what they have done when in my situation.
I hope somebody can offer some advice, i'd really appreciate it.

Hi,
I insure my carry as a self-build campervan with shield insurance - http://www.shieldtotalinsurance.co.uk/self-build-motorhome-insurance - they allow you 120 days to complete the conversion.
Worryingly at the bottom of this page, they need the conversions to be re-registered with the DVLA as a Motor Caravan - I will have to phone them about this tomorrow, as although my conversion followed the DLVA guidelines, they declined re-classifying it as it still looked like a van!
Anyway, give them a bell and see what they say.

If I have seen further it is by standing on ye sholders of Giants.
Thanks Dave, I will get in touch with them as soon as possible. Am collecting my van from Drivelodge on the 29th Nov...can't wait to get started on doing the rest of the work myself!
Sara
thanks for the heads up Dave re shield.
just got my LDV covered by them. It was just over 400 quid compared to 600 plus from another place (can't remember who it was, doh!).
cheers.
now let the hard work begin.
I use Adrian Flux, they have a few different types of insurance to cover campervans.
I used to have camper cover on my old Vito, and when I got a new vito to convert to a camper I went through them and got campervan-in-conversion cover (there doesn't seem to be a deadline on how long you have to finish the conversion). We got windows put in recently and I called them to make sure the new windows were covered and to report the change, and they said we didin't need to let them know, all the usual changes to make a van into a camper are covered.
The insurance for the camper-in-conversion was around £200 cheaper than what it was as a panel van, which is brill :-)
Whether you own a van that you use for commercial purposes or personal purposes, it is imperative to get a Van insurance policy for it. For those who use their vans for their business, getting insurance is even more important because their business depends a lot on their vehicle and the insurance gives them a sense of safety and security. As an added benefit, many companies also provide insurance for the contents of the van in the event of their being damaged or misplaced.

Ok, i've now finished the love bus, well I've still for a few jobs to do but they will never get done.lol.
I sent the pictures required to Shield to show the ocnversion and its all sorted. It really has been plain sailing with them.
I would recomend them any day.

Hi I went with Adrian Flux, they were very helpful and efficient, and their quote was significantly cheaper than Sheild.
