Diesel Alternatives & Bio-Diesel

Hi guys...

I really want to find out more about alternatives to diesel to run my van off.  I want something environmentally friendly, but I also want to stop paying out half my salary on bloomin diesel!  Can anyone give me a run down of the options?

Biodiesel etc..

Hi,

Just wanted to add to Greg's question.  I'm also trying to find cheaper options for running a VW Transporter than conventional diesel.  Would really appreciate advice from anyone who has looked into this?..

Using Chip Fat

Hi guys - I know one of my mates goes round chip shop collecting their chip fat and uses that in some capacity to run his van off.  I'll have to ask him exactly what the deal is - I suspect he mixes the fat with ordinary diesel, but no idea what ration, whether he altered his engine at all, or what the deal tax-wise is.  Would be great to know the answer, 'cos diesel is costing a bloomin fortune these days!!

Biodiesel info

Check out http://greenfuels.co.uk/ which has some pretty good info about biodiesel.  I'd love to go for it, but might hold off until I get a new van.  Then I might reconsider what the options are - maybe hydrogen will be in by then!!

Diesel or Petrol van and converting to LPG

Hi guys,

What do folk think about petrol vs diesel - it used to be that diesel was easily the cheapest option, but with prices how they are I'm not so sure any more.  Plus if I get a petrol van I think I can convert it to LPG pretty easily and then the fuel is half the price!  What do folk think?

I think diesel still has the

I think diesel still has the advantage over petrol cost wise...but LPG would easily beat both for price I think.

There are a few downsides of LPG that you want to consider:

1- Not every gas station sells LPG, this is probably not a problem unless your in the middle of nowhere in North Scotland or something...then it could be a problem. A wee bit of planning ahead for your fuel use could solve this issue i suppose..

2-The conversion will probably cost a bit although I dont know the exact figure..anyone else?

3-Converting a new vehicle to LPG immediately voids the warrenty in most cases. This may or may not phase you!

Just some thoughts for you!

 Vegetable oil is the best,

Vegetable oil is the best, as it is carbon neutral. Also it is currently half the price of Diesel. The tax on Veg Oil is that it is tax free providing you use under 1500 liters a year I think... I don't know how they would measure this though :S. Visit www.vegoilmotoring.com for more info.

Bio-Diesel is not carbon neutral at the moment because unfortunatley, they cut down ancient forests to plant the plants that it is derived from, which makes it more damaging to the environment than regular Diesel.

Hope this helps,

Ashley.
