Floor for Sprinter - do I take it up to have a look?

Hi,

Thanks for all the information I've already gleened from the site - great!

Took the plunge yesterday and bought a second hand lwb hi-top Merc Sprinter 2002 145000 miles on the clock.

First things first! It's ply lined, the floor is scruffy (been used as a delivery van) and but seems pretty solid. If it was screwed down I would definatley lift it up and make sure everything is ok underneath rust wise, also add insulation if possible. It's not, it's riveted - can anyone help me decide whether or not to go to the bother of taking it up? It'll be a right pain drilling out the rivets etc - but I don't want to build everything in there only to find out later I should have.

Any other tips gratefully recieved!

Thanks in advance!!!

Marc

To look or not to look

Hey Marc,

Couple of thoughts.....check the underneath from the outside, especially round the rivets.  It might start to give you an idea of whether there is any major rust or anything to be concerned about.  If not, I'd maybe try to take up a bit of the floor (cut a small hatch or the like) to let you have a look without having to take the whole floor up.  Depends how much effort you're putting in to the conversion and how long you are planning to have the camper van.  I'd probably prefer to know for sure but it could be a lot of hassle.  Someone else might have a good idea, I've not really dealt with riveting before....
