VW T30 or Mercedes Vito?

I'm planning to buy a window van to semi-convert into a camper [somewhere to sleep, a second battery for laptop, kettle, fridge, hairdryer(!)], but most cooking would be done outside.

I think I've narrowed the choice to a VW Transporter passenger (window) van, SWB with either standard or medium roof, or a Mercedes Vito (long) with high roof. Each has its advantages. I know I'll have to buy new to get the specification I need (I don't want to cut windows, for example, and would like a higher roof). It seems extravagant, but nothing compared to the cost of a full-blown campervan.

I wondered if anyone had any advice for me on the choice. I'm particularly interested to hear from anyone who's used a standard roof height for camping (long term as well as odd weekends). I'm 5' 8" but my friend is 6' 2". I'm not expecting to be able to stand up, but sitting and moving about comfortably is important. I really don't like the elevating or pop-up roof idea, I'm afraid.

Many thanks.

VW or Mercedes

Hi Rebecca,

I'm a big fan of the VW but I reckon the Mercedes will be good too, especially if you are buying new.   I've lived for several months at a time in a standard height campervan with my boyfriend (I'm 5'7" and he is 5'11").  It is totally fine once you are sitting but I'd have to say it is less than ideal when moving around.  You get good at the crouch and shuffle!  We compromised however, as we really needed to be able to get things up on the roof easily but I know friends (of the shorter variety!) who have high tops and there is definitely something nice about being able to stand up e.g. to cook and to move about.

I see from the manufacturers spec. that the high roof vito gives you 1.76m inside (5' 7 3/4").  It's a shame to get a high top when you still won't quite be able to stand but you are both quite tall and it would still give you more space for storage etc and would feel less claustrophobic.

The other option which someone else on the forum was looking at is to get a good awning for the side or rear of the van and then this can give you covered standing room space.  Good luck deciding!
