Safety and crumple zones

What a great site! Thank you all. We've had a Transit as a family van for 15 years or so as the kids were growing up. A very basic conversion with lockable plywood storage boxes that doubled as seats / cooking worktop, and could be turned into one big family bed. As the girls grew bigger, we camped "from" it, rather than in it. It was absolutely wonderful. Now the girls are grown up, but still want to come with us, with boyfriend and family dog too!

So along comes bus number two, after a long save-up - a 2006 Ford Transit Tourneo 9-seat minibus. Outline plan is to remove middle row of seats and build in box units in the space. Behind the back seats, for secure storage (cameras, binoculars, climbing kit etc) I'm thinking of fitting a steel security box - one of the following:

Height
Width (ie across vehicle)
Depth (front to back)
Construction
Van Vault Outback
490 mm
1369 mm
596 mm
2 mm sheet steel
Sentri Xlock Truck Box (515)
450 mm
1310 mm
492 mm
1.6 mm and 2mm sheet steel

Either would come within a few inches of the back door. My question is: do you think this will interfere with the crumple zone enough to reduce the safety of rear seat passengers if the bus is hit in the rear by another vehicle?

I'd be very grateful for your opinons.
Many thanks,
Mike Wright.

(Incidentally, the old bus could go very cheaply to a good home!)
