Hi we would like to put a drop down bed in the cab of our Merc 709D. Have been searching the net trying to find someone that sells them but no luck so far. Does anyone have any ideas where we could try please and also tips on fitting it if we find one? Thanks

Can't find any mention on the web of a drop down in a Merc either. Reckon you would either have to look at drop down beds in other motorhomes e.g. the Hymers.....not sure if one of those could be made to fit the Merc, or you might have' to look at the true conversion path of making something yourself? If you could get a good look at the mechanism in an existing van I reckon in theory it must be possible (tho' not necessarily easy).

hi ruth,
new members, because we are thinking about building another van. at the momeNDnt we have an a-class with the layout which we are deeply wedded to: dropdown bed over cab (fantastic) and toilet/shower along the back. this leaves all the middle of van empty with only kitchen and wardrobe to be fitted thus plenty of space for seating.
And so to the bed, which is how i found this site, seeking the same answer as you. We've seen a few clumsy attempts involving a lot of pushing up and careful lowering. our bed is on cantilever hinges attached to a metal frame, not to heavy, so a welder would do the job, if you could locate the hinges.
a few years ago we visited a company in Poole who did a longitudinal bed fitting on VW LT's, this involved cutting out a section of the roof and fitting a pod - this gets over the width problem inherent in van conversions: it was a £1000 cost, and that was 20 years ago, god knows how much now.
I know this is all complicated but well worth the while because of the space saved and the sheer beauty of a bed which goes away - do you want to buy our laika instead (only half joking).
