My Shopping List
Posted Tue, 02/03/2009 - 19:22 Hi I am thinking of converting a peugeot boxer crew van. I have chose it as it is part windowed leving a space for a small "boot" area at the back.
Does anyone have any advise on its suitability?
Also, I have come up with this shopping list based on "guestimates" and ebay prices (yes I am not fussed on second hand!).
Do you think I am grossly out on my costings? Or have I forgotten anything?
electric controller | 50 |
leisure battary | 60 |
futon (for bead and sofa) | 100 |
sink | 25 |
cooker | 25 |
fridge | 50 |
electric cable | 50 |
gas bottle | 20 |
240v hookup cable | 20 |
lights | 70 |
casette toilet | 70 |
carpet | 50 |
wall covering | 50 |
cupboard units (mimialist and home made) | 50 |
insulation | 70 |
plyboard and sheet plastic (for lining) | 70 |
heater | 200 |
Total | 1030 |
Hi Holly,
Peugeot boxer should make a decent van for converting. Have seen a couple before. Reckon most of the shopping list and prices look about right - especially if you have looked and found some stuff on ebay. One thing is I'd add in a little contingency, especially for things like postage. Some larger / heavier items may cost £10-£20 to deliver. Looking back at what I paid for a recent conversion (incl. VAT and postage), Leisure battery was £70, Cushions/Bed £160, Gas Bottle £18, Carpet £10 (got cheap offcuts from a local store), Cooker and Sink combo £65, Propex Heater £400 and reckon all the wiring, gas tubing, plywood, 2x2 supports, nails, glue, screws, hinges, insulation was about £250. Doesn't look like you've really missed anything out either (although you might want some more plywood to put a floor in?). Happy converting :o)
Cheers!
What van have you converted?
Do you have any pics? I am always looking for insparation and novel ides.
Anyone else got any novel ides.
I once saw a camper with a log burner which I thought was good. I put one in our house and the're a bit weighty! recon the diesel cost to lump it about might be high. Also once saw one with cooker pertruding over the side door thought this would be good to look over good views whilst cooking.
Cheers,
-Steve
Only really properly converted a Transporter. Quite similar layout to the one detailed on this site, swivel front seats, bench bed, units on the far wall opposite sliding door etc. It seems to be a sort of standardish layout. Some mates had done one a few months earlier and it was pretty useful for ideas. Never took any photos at the time I was converting but might try and root some out. The Blogs are pretty useful for ideas and pics.
The wood burner idea is quite a cool one. There were another couple of posts on this issue. I had a mate who put one it but she had a big van, so a big space to heat and the power to lug it about. I reckon the secret would be to fashion your own so it is as small as possible. There was a programme once about a guy who welded old VW petrol tanks and made them into funky stoves.... easy if you got an oxy-acetylene welding kit to hand!! :o)
Hi Holly
I'm just about finishing converting a Transit 90 T350 short wheelbase hitop (I'm a bit under 6') I looked at other makes but chose Ford because they are the most numerous commercial vehicle there is and even on the continent the chances of getting repairs/spares for Trannies are good.
Your guestimate prices won't be too far out but largely depends on how sophisticated you want the internal fit. I'm a joiner by trade so I spent quite a bit of time studding the van out, getting as much insulation in as possible and lining the whole thing with ply which is great to give you fixing. For anyone that has done a Transit lining.....the rear corners are.....pigs. I'm thinking of writing a helpsheet just for finishing the back two corners.
Hope your fit goes well. I have done a bit of research and spoken to a few people about 12v electrics. I've decided to go for a leisure battery with a mains hook up and VERY low consumption items. Haven't tested it on a long journey yet but think it will provide LED lighting and coolbox (when engine off) for 3 days...ish. Then pull into somewhere with 13amp and charge your leisure battery up!
Oh...a tip for the fitting/lining. Get your spirit level...and put it away. You won't need it. Its all done by eye.

All looks good to me,
you might want to consider a zig though, they make electrics a lot less hassle and more reliable.

There's a fair bit about electrics etc.
