Protecting main starter battery?

Hi,

I have recently puchased a ford transit van which was already converted into a "mess unit" for workmen and has leisure batteries, water heater, air heater, microwave etc which I thought was great as a lot of the work to convert to a camper is done.

I've found that the leisure batteries are a bit knackered so I will replace those - there are currently 2x 110aH Numax batteries.

I'm concerned however that they have not separated the leisure batteries and the starter batteries.

There is an isolator switch on the dash which I am pretty sure isolates only the appliances from the leisure batteries and prevent unwanted drain.

I can see the big red positive cable coming in from the starter battery into the leisure batteries.

However having removed the two leisure batteries there is still 9.9V (seemed low) running to the removed battery connections with the engine off and around 14v to the terminals with the engine running.   Does this mean that there is no ignition relay and that the batteries are always linked together?

If so, what do I need to do to get this sorted?  Just another relay as seen in some other forums?

Thanks,

Richard.
