When converting to a camper, can a roof top tent bed be the 'fixed bed'? I like the idea of doing a simple camper using a Toyota Previa. As space is limited I had the idea of a roof top tent. Some of these are hard top too so I suppose you could argue they are a permanent feature??
I know the Previa has seats that make into a double bed but Id rip them out for space. To register it as a camper with dvla I realise I would have to have a fixed cooker/wash facilities - witch for me at least - would mean a kitchen area and cupboard space to the side of it. Id have to use the space that the seats occupy for this.
Have a look at this nicely converted Previa with a Rock n Roll bed and kitchen to the side.
Same sort of configuration that people use when doing a basic camper van to satisfy the requirements. Problem is that with the kitchen unit and cupboard the bed looks like it's the width of a single! Id prefer something a bit wider I think.....
With a roof tent as the sleeping area you could have a pretty nice living area with kitchen and plenty of storage.
The Previa does have a lot going for it as a potential camper. I'm fairly sure it has swivel captain seats up front. It has seperate heating control for front and back. Its as long as a van, there pretty old now and they never seem to have any rust on them for some reason. All round pretty comfortable vehical too.
Thoughts? Cheers.
A rooftent? Wow, Can't believe I'd never heard of one of them before! My only thought is, nice on the continent in the summer, not sure about the UK on a windy day?! Anyway , based on the DVLA description I don't think the roof tent would qualify as integral. The conversion you linked to looked pretty good, nice and compact but yes, small. As a compromise, how about setting it up so the seat inside 'could' be a bed but is really set up for optimal living space e.g. can be small and then also have the roof tent which is what you will actually mostly use for sleeping. That hopefully covers the DVLA requirement and also gives you the added benefit of having everything inside which you could use for those days you don't want to / can't use the roof tent?
I'm liking the sound of these roof tents. Anyone use one? How stable are they and what kind of money are we talkin.......
