Hi all.
Thought I'd start this blog to document the conversion of my 02 plate LDV Convoy minibus to a campervan. I don't really have a timetable for the work to be completed as I have a full time job to do as well so work will progress as and when time and finances allow. The plan is to build a comfortable 2(+2) berth van resonably cheaply.
The base vehicle is an 02 plate LDV Convoy 17 seat minibus with the Ford 2.4 litre turbocharged Duratorque diesel engine. She started life with a leasing company on lease to the MOD at the Clyde Submarine Base in Scotland. After being demobbed she was sold at auction to a bus company who used her on local authority special needs mobility contracts. I purchased her when she came up for sale as part of the company's fleet replacement programme.
Work so far done includes:
- Removal of previous owners logos
- Removal of all seats
- Replacement of the standard rear step with a Witter / Dixon Bate towbar / rearstep and electrics
- Replacing the standard LDV 2+1 front seats with 2 front seats from a Peugeot 806 complete with bases with built in storage drawers and swivel plates.
- Reloading the front seatbelt inertia reels with the belts from the Peugeot to match the seats.
Work planned in the near future includes:
- A full mechanical service including some minor repair work.
- Undersealing including injecting Waxoyl inside the cavities.
- Extending the roof over the bonnet to allow space for 2 single bunks fore and aft above the cab
- Installing insulation (plan to use Kingspan)
- Electrical work including 240volt hook-up, 12volt leisure battery and split charge system
Other work planned includes;
- Construction of a rear U shaped lounge with storage beneath which converts to a transverse double bed.
- Construction of a wardrobe with fridge below and cooking area with 2 burner stove and grill on O / S of van
- Construction of toilet cubicle for Porta-Potti and sink area on N / S
My choice of base vehicle was quite simple really. Whilst I would love an old bubble nose Merc (early 1980's 0500 models)I acquired SA02 when she came up for sale as part of an ongoing fleet renewa...
